Crowns or “caps” have been used in dentistry for many, many years. Although originally made primarily from metal – gold in particular – today’s crowns are typically made of a strong dental porcelain material. Designed to cover the entire surface of a tooth, porcelain crowns have gained popularity over the past several years. Not only is the material extremely durable, but it can be made to very closely match the color of the patient’s natural teeth. Dr. Rivera is pleased to offer porcelain crowns to his patients in and around the Victoria, TX, area.
Why Porcelain Crowns Are So Popular
Undoubtedly, the main reason why porcelain crowns are popular is because the shade of the crown can be matched to the patient’s natural tooth color. That means that porcelain crowns are barely noticeable to other people. While some patients still choose metal crowns – particularly for teeth located in the back of the mouth – porcelain crowns are becoming increasingly more common. Another reason for their popularity is their durability – they typically last for many, many years.
The process involved in getting a new porcelain crown requires two trips to our Victoria, TX, office. During the first visit, Dr. Rivera will prepare the tooth for the crown by removing any existing decay and thoroughly cleaning the tooth. An impression of the tooth will also be made during this first visit, and that impression will be used to create a new permanent crown. In the meantime, while the new crown is being made, the patient will be provided with a temporary crown to wear until the second visit, when Dr. Rivera will place the porcelain crown.
